Buffalo received forward Conor Sheary and veteran defenseman Matt Hunwick for a conditional 4th-round pick for the 2019 NHL draft. This pick could become a third-round pick.
This looks to be a move to get Pittsburgh a little bit of salary cap room. Personally, I feel that Sheary and Hunwick are decent depth pieces for a typically affordable price, especially since the NHL salary cap is going up to $79.5 million for the 2018-19 season. They are both under contract through the 2019-20 season; Sheary will receive $3 million for 2 years, while Hunwick will receive $2.5 million for the 2018-19 season and $1.75 million for the 2019-20 season. They will become unrestricted free agents in the summer of 2020.
Sheary helped win two cups with the Penguins, while Hunwick played one season in Pittsburgh, playing in 42 games.
